Advocacy for individuals, carers and families

Headwest provides a specialist advocacy service for people living with an acquired brain injury, their families and carers. Headwest offers confidential guidance and support in your dealings with services and government at all levels; local, state and federal. We can assist people living with acquired brain injuries, families and carers by investigating issues, providing useful contacts and links to other services and facilitating solutions. We can also help you to learn how to become a stronger self advocate.

Some of the main issues that Headwest advocates for include:

  • Affordable accommodation - public and community housing;
  • Income - getting by on a low income,
  • Centrelink, compensation etc;
  • Rehabilitation services;
  • Support services for carers;
  • Human rights;
  • And more....

How to use our advocacy service

You can access the service by appointment at Headwest, 645 Canning Highway, Alfred Cove WA 6154 Tel (08) 9330 6370 Fax (08) 317 2264 E-mail admin@headwest.asn.au Website www.headwest.asn.au Or download a referral form and send it to Headwest

Systemic advocacy

Headwest can also assist by identifying and addressing issues which may concern larger numbers of people, for example we can lobby government to ensure that gaps in services are addressed, or that legislation to protect the rights of people living with acquired brain injury is promoted.

Support Groups

Headwest runs support groups for people living with acquired brain injury and carers. The groups are called "Nutcracker Groups". The participants have a weekly opportunity to share a meal and to engage in community activities. The groups help to reduce the social insolation, loneliness and loss of meaning experienced by many participants after leaving hospital. The groups also offer opportunities to speak out about what needs to change.
There are two groups at present, one in:
  • Melville, which meets on Tuesdays, and one in
  • Mandurah - meets on Wednesdays.
If you are interested in joining and would like to find out more about the Nutcracker Groups, or if you would to start a support group in your area, please contact Headwest on 9330 6370.

The support groups are reliant on donations, as they are not funded by government.
